Jessica Garcia Diaz, of Hickory
NC Highway Patrol Intern
‘09 CVCC A.A.S. Criminal Justice Technology – Latent Evidence
I moved to Hickory from West Virginia right out of high school to work in furniture.
I did go back to W.VA. to work in the coal mines for two months once. I worked underground laying water lines and assembling belt structures. I was the only woman and I worked really hard to prove myself so they would accept me. The money was really good, but it was night shift and that was just too hard with my two kids. So, I came back to the furniture plant in Hickory.
I was laid off after 12 years so, I decided to come back to school. I had always liked TV reality police shows. I always thought it was interesting so I decided to look into that as a career. CVCC was close by and convenient and they had the program I wanted.
During my studies, I was able to get an internship with the NC Highway Patrol working in the accident reconstruction unit. That's what interests me the most. That kind of investigation fascinates me.
I recommend CVCC to everybody all the time. The college has all kinds of services and help available so if anybody is struggling, they can get the help they need and succeed in their classes.
The Learning Assistance Center and the Writing Center is great. I took every paper I wrote for class to the Writing Center and they would go over it, sentence by sentence and show me how to improve it.
It's been hard. College is different than a full time job where you go to work and then come home and do what you want. With college, you go to class and then come home and study on top of everything else. But, I worked hard and took heavy class loads to finish. I am CVCC.
