Guy Hollar Memorial Tournament Raises $8,900, Creates Educational Opportunities

**Information Provided by Tournament Organizers**

The Guy Hollar Memorial Golf Tournament, held Oct. 26, 2009, at Rock Barn Golf & Spa by Mr. Hollar’s family and friends, raised $8,900 that will be used for the development of scholarships and educational programs at Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) through the CVCC Foundation, Inc.

The tournament, created in memory of longtime Rock Barn Director of Grounds Guy Hollar (1952-2008), hosted a total of 30 teams and was won by the Carolinas Golf Course Superintendents Association foursome of Larry Boswell, Jay Gardner, Paul Jett, and Bill Patton.

A substantial portion of the funds raised will create the Guy Hollar Memorial Scholarship, which will be awarded to deserving students of the Turfgrass Management Technology Program in the School of Business, Industry & Technology at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, N.C.

“Mr. Hollar, a CVCC alumnus, was dedicated to serving his family, his industry, and his community with the highest level of excellence and resolve,” said CVCC President Garrett Hinshaw.  “Mr. Hollar was a scholarship recipient while attending CVCC, and the funds invested in his memory will benefit other students that emulate his character.”

To be eligible for the scholarship, which will provide financial assistance toward CVCC tuition, students must meet the following criteria:
• Current enrollment in CVCC’s Turfgrass Management Technology Program
• Western North Carolina resident
• Minimum grade point average of 3.0
• Completion by the Fall 2010 semester of at least 50 percent of the required credit hours needed to graduate
• Possession of the attributes exemplified by Guy Hollar, including strong career goals, excellent people skills, and a commitment to community service

Scholarship applications will be distributed to all students enrolled in CVCC’s Turfgrass Management Technology Program.

In addition, funds from the tournament will develop the Guy Hollar Hands-On Education program at CVCC. This new initiative is designed to provide an enhanced learning environment, including elements such as field trips and industry-specific speakers, that will enrich the educational experience of CVCC’s Turfgrass Management Technology students.

Guy Hollar resided in Claremont, N.C.  In 1970, he received the Golf Course Superintendents of America (GCSAA) Scholarship and enrolled in Catawba Valley Technical Institute (now Catawba Valley Community College). In 1972, he graduated with a degree in turfgrass management. Throughout his career, he enjoyed his involvement with organizations such as the GCSAA that played a role in teaching others about his profession.
